Hokulani Kai a Paradise

This large, comfortable, clean, private, ocean-front house has everything you need for your dream getaway to the Big Island. Owners Pat and Andy even help you to plan your vacation by providing ideas for activities and dining. The house is a short bike's (provided) ride to the Champagne Pond and Kapoho tide pools for the best in east-island snorkeling. It is also mid-way between the main visiting area of Volcanos National Park and access to current lava viewing. Every other place we have stayed in Hawaii was a dump--this house is nicer than home!

Spectacular House Amazing Location

Enjoyed the ocean front deck every day! We saw a turtle riding in on a wave. Crab fisherman were there daily gathering crabs.

There was ample ocean equipment at the house for anything you can do in the ocean.

The house was beautiful and had everything you need to cook or just relax in.

There is a lot of beautiful beaches around the area.

The property and the owners are a winner. Pat was very helpful before we arrived and during our stay. We were absolutely awed that this house was even better in person. Every detail was excellent, and the house well-cared for. Loved that there was a notebook filled with helpful hints for the stay there. I've been to the Hawaiian Islands 4 times and would like to see other places in the world, but would definitely come back to Hilo just for this house. Can't go wrong with this one! Make sure you look at all the amenities they provide! The owners are very generous sharing their things-from kayaks to providing laundry detergent and pancake syrup and much, much more. Can't wait to go back.

Beautiful home

The pictures don't do the home justice. It is a beautiful place to retreat. Plenty of things to do with a short drive but far enough out that your never crowded. Neighbors were amazingly friendly. Home is equipped with anything you might need.

Perfect location, absolutely beautiful house

House had every single thing you could ever need. The rooftop hottub and seating area was amazing for sitting with a glass of wine. We walked and biked to two different sets of warm ocean pools to snorkel in. The open concept kitchen, den and dining area was beautifully appointed, though we never ate inside, preferring to sit on the beautiful porch overlooking the ocean. Master bedroom was lovely and roomy with the king bed and lots of windows. Nice to have the bikes to borrow and the ping pong table under the house. Really cannot think of one more thing I could have asked for. It was a little warm sometimes when we came home, but once we opened all the windows, the cross breeze cooled us off quickly. Oh, and what an amazing laundry room!

Relaxing and Peaceful

Hokulani Kai is a great place to relax and is a great home base for relaxing on the Island. Sleeping to the sound of surf was awesome. Some of the best snorkeling is right out your back door. Having bikes to ride to various tide pools was great too. Was concerned that heat at night would be to much, but the trade winds kept it very comfortable. We loved sitting in the hot tub at night watching the stars and the Milky Way. The kitchen had all essential items. Will look forward to a return visit.

Incredible oceanfront views

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful oceanfront home in Kapoho. The house is right on the water; we enjoyed swimming every day. Amazingly warm and tropical! We found some fun tidepools only a bike ride away. The hot tub on the roof has a spectacular view. We will definitely be returning to this hidden gem

Perfect Paradise

Hokulani Kai is a perfect slice of paradise on the Big Island. The house is wonderful - everything you could need in the kitchen, incredible views from lanai and rooftop deck, comfortable beds, soothing showers, and nice Hawaiian decorations and artwork. At times, I felt like I was on a boat as I looked out the bedroom window or gazing out at the ocean from the rooftop hot tub. At night, the ocean is all you hear. You can sit for hours watching the changing clouds, ocean color and waves. There is ocean access at the house and fish and turtles. You can swim along the coast in front of the house or take the cruiser bicycles to many different tidepools and ocean access points in the neighborhood. We enjoyed staying near the house on this trip, but it's an easy drive to the volcano, Hilo, waterfalls, markets and more. Can't wait to go back!

Stunningly beautiful home

Hokulani Kai absolutely blew us away. It was beyond what we expected. Not only does this beautiful home sit right at the waters edge, but right out in front is the best snorkeling and free diving in Kapoho in my opinion. There are several resident sea turtles that can often be found resting under the coral bommies, there are countless octopuses that we spotted roaming around the reef and schools of surgeon fishes as well as the usual reef fish, urchin and sea cucumber. And the best part... its virtually private. If you want other options you can head over to the marine reserve where the sea life is also plentiful. We enjoyed riding bikes around Kapoho checking out all the local flora and fauna which included different types of tropical flowers, geckos, lizards, and birds. In the evenings we sat in the spa and star gazed while listening to the water lapping at the shore. We ate dinner on the lanai every evening and in the mornings we had fresh fruit from the local Maku'u market (farmers market every sunday) while watching the sun rise. This house comes equipped with everything you could possibly need. Never once did we feel like it was a vacation rental, but actually our home. This is the gem of Kapoho and we will be back for years to come.

  • What an amazing and special place this was. We had a great time here. Lots of toys and amenities for our use. We could hear the gentle lapping of the waves all night and wow, what a view! Would definitely stay here again.

This is one of the most beautiful homes I have ever seen. It was clean, comfortable and the pictures you see just does not do it justice. You are right on the ocean and the sights are beautiful from the lanai upstairs with the hot tub-unbelievable. The owner Pat was super to deal with and she sent us lots of information about sights to see, restaurants, and grocery stores. We got our deposit back quickly and we cannot say enough about our time there. It was outstanding. If I could give it a 10 if I would. Our memories will last a lifetime!

We loved the location and the home; it had just the right combination of indoor and outdoor living spaces—plenty of room to spread out. The roof-top deck was a real plus. The amenities were just right for our stay.

The ocean view is incredible and this property is close to tide pools for snorkeling.

The owners were wonderful to deal with and, when I had a little trouble locating the home on our first night's stay, owner Pat Starkie stayed on the phone with me and guided me right to the door of the property!

We enjoyed relaxing in the home during the evenings, having coffee and breakfast on the deck, snorkeling the tide pools, using the bikes (provided) to bike the Kapoho Vacation area, traveling the short distance to Hilo to visit the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens and dining in Pahoa—the Thai restaurant is particularly good.

I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone traveling to the east coast of the Big Island.

We've stayed in countless Kapoho area vacation rentals over the years but nothing.. NOTHING compares to this property! Absolutely amazing in every way. Waterfront on your own private bay with turtles and fish. Situated so that the spray goes right past you without entering the house. Rooftop hot tub.. moonrises over the ocean.. just magical. Beautifully built house with all the amenities. Amazing job, guys. Thank you thank you thank you for such a magical time!

The house was perfect for our vacation in the Kapoho area! The location is awesome and the views are spectacular! The house was equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable, relaxing and fun stay. The owners provided us with very helpful information about the house, the amenities and the local attractions. They they gave us great instructions for our arrival at the house and seemed genuinely concerned that we would have everything we needed for our stay.

Thank you for your hospitality, Pat and Andy!

Hokulani Kai was so very comfortable and relaxing. There are plenty of things to see and do on this side of the island, several of which are quite local. We enjoyed some short hikes around Hilo, Mauna Kea, and in volcano national park. It was amazing to see the lava flowing into the ocean at sunset. Snorkeling at the house is excellent, swim out to the lighter coloured areas where it drops off and you can see tons of fish. Also excellent snorkeling at the tide pools and in champagne pond (both of which are a very short bike ride away). Had quite a lot of fun with the kayaks and playing ping pong in the garage. The owners have left a list of things to see and do in the area, as well as suggestions on where to eat which was very helpful. The house is open concept, very bright and spacious (bigger then I thought it was from the pictures). Everything in it is of very high quality and is maintained very well. The cleaning staff does a very good job, every square inch was spotless. The owners are very attentive and quick to respond to questions. If your looking for a comfortable and private place to relax look no further.

If you're looking for a drop dead gorgeous house in a quiet rural setting on the east side of Hawaii look no further. This home has it all...panoramic views of the coastline from almost every room in the house, added safety of being able to park inside of a garage that's full of toys to play with in the water plus bicycles, an elevator from the garage will bring you to the main living area if you don't want to utilize the stairs (have never found that in a VRBO home before) and an abundance of modern amenities throughout the kitchen. We used this home as a base for exploring the entire east side of the island. At the end of each day we looked forward to sipping on a cool drink while relaxing in the hot with its amazing views of the bay & ocean. A 30 minute drive and short bike ride will take you to the edge of the real-time lava flowing into the ocean, an amazing sight to witness as the sun is going down. We ate dinner out 1/2 of the time and brought it back the other 1/2 to enjoy from the fabulous views on the decks.

We loved our stay and the house is amazing. Pat sent great instructions for the arrival and places to visit. The home was comfortable and beautifully crafted. Although we were not able to use the hot tub and see the amazing stars at night or take the kayak's out in the bay because it rained the whole visit and the bay was not calm. We were able to visit some amazing spots that Pat had recommended when it cleared enough to do some activities..Loved Kapoho Tide Pools it was like swimming in a aquarium. Because the weather was cooler we went and did the zip line at Umauma Falls, first time on a zip-line and will do again. Champagne pond was also fun to visit. As we left everyday to venture out our neighbor was there and was extremely nice and gave us lots of helpful hints. We would love to visit again.
Thank you Pat,

Excellent Rental

I just spent a wonderful three days at this beautiful home. Everything was as described, and then some. Being right on the water was fantastic. The house is just gorgeous. I really can’t say enough good things. We used the hot tub and the bikes, but found the December waves a little much for us to feel comfortable putting the kayaks in (we’ve never ocean kayaked before - if you know what you’re doing it would probably seem different. I think winter waves are a little higher anyway, and a storm had just moved through the area). Pat was very responsive to questions, and provided a lot of helpful information about local activities. None of us wanted to leave. Only negative is the house does get warm when closed up in the sun all day, though it cools down pretty quickly once you open the windows. One of my college-aged kids is pretty sensitive to heat, but even he was okay with fans going. Really lovely place - I hope I have a chance to return some day.
